Nikkei Australia remembers Dr Pam Oliver’s tireless work and numerous publications about Japanese experiences in Australia. Pam Oliver contributed valuable research and scholarship pertaining to Japan – Australia bilateral relations as well as Australian attitudes towards Japan.

Her many publications include Changing Histories: Australia and Japan (Monash Asia Institute, 2000) with Paul Jones; Unexpected Encounters: Neglected Histories Behind the Australia-Japan Relationship (Monash University Publishing, 2006) with Michael Ackland; and the award winning book, Empty North: The Japanese Presence and Australian Reactions 1860s to 1942 (CDU Press, 2006).

Many researchers interested in Australia’s relationship with Japan has a copy of her guidebook, Allies, enemies and trading partners: records on Australia and the Japanese (National Archives of Australia, 2004). Another of Pam’s publications, Japanese Relationships in White Australia: The Sydney Experience to 1941, offers a fascinating insight into relationships between white Australians and the Japanese in Sydney prior to the Pacific War.

Vale Pam Oliver.
