Nikkei Australia members elected Executive Officers at the Annual General Meeting in October 2025. Their term begins in November 2025 for three years, until November 2028. Please meet our new executive team…
Our Chair: Arisa Yura (pictured above) is Japanese Australian actor, writer and artist based in Naarm (Melbourne), who has worked extensively across Australia, Japan, USA, and Canada.
Arisa’s recent projects intersect around the conversations of diaspora, migration, and identity focusing on the perspectives from women and children.
Arisa is honoured and excited to take on this new position as the Chair of Nikkei Australia, a community organisation that connects and builds our resilient Nikkei community in Australia.
The Secretary and Treasurer roles will be shared by Declan Fleming and Jo-Anne Shiosaki:
Our Secretary/Treasurer: Declan Fleming is a second generation Japanese Australian born and raised in Sydney, Australia. He has been involved with Nikkei Australia since 2019. Declan has a strong interest in the history of the Japanese Australian community and Japanese diaspora more generally.
He is keen to work with members on related projects in the future, and although no longer at university, remains interested in and tries to keep up to date with relevant scholarship as it is published.
Our Secretary/Treasurer: Jo-Anne Shiosaki is a proud fourth generation Nikkei who resides in Broome, Western Australia, a town shaped in part by her Japanese ancestors in the late 1800s. Growing up in a mixed-race family, she carries a legacy of resilience, storytelling, and cultural richness.
Her career has been dedicated to advancing First Nations communities throughout the Kimberley, with a significant focus in tertiary education. In this role, she championed equity in rural and remote communities, increasing the number of qualified Indigenous teachers in the region.
Inspired by the Japanese diaspora, Broome’s rich history and her grandparents’ stories, Jo remains committed to preserving cultural knowledge, amplifying community voices, and fostering intergenerational connection.
