Nikkei Australia founding member Dr Keiko Tamura and other members feature in a SBS news story reflecting on Nikkei histories in the lead up to the 80th anniversary of the end of the War in the Pacific in August 2025.
The story shines a spotlight on Elysha Rei and her mother Jan Kirkham, both Nikkei Australia members living in Queensland. Jan’s mother and Elysha’s grandmother is Akiko Kirkham (now deceased), one of the first Japanese war brides to come to Queensland after the end of World War II.
Elysha speaks about her kirie art practice, and how her works are often inspired by her close relationship with her grandmother. Jan reflects on her own personal journey of re-discovering her heritage. Elysha’s son Kairo also appears in this news segment.
